Abstract

To impede and remedy the automatic transmission of discriminatory religious interpretations between and within generations, we need to launch a program of profound reform of Islamic teaching, now largely based on the passive transmission of historical compilations. This must be replaced by a program that uses the resources of modern education, including the historical approach and existing analytical social science tools in the study of scriptural texts and sources. And we urgently need to return to the employment of ijtihād both as a concept and as an indispensable means of contextualizing scriptural sources, but also for the conduct of critical analysis and synthesis in reference to the social, political, and legal realities of the present time.
