Midurethral Synthetic Slings
Midurethral slings gained popularity in the early part of the millennium almost completely replacing the colposuspension as the procedure of choice for stress urinary incontinence. Made of Type 1 polypropylene synthetic mesh it can be performed through one of two routes, retropubic or the obturator. With the recent adverse publicity surrounding synthetic mesh used vaginally, the procedure continues to be performed but with greater caution and emphasis is on patient counselling and consent as well as an adequate discussion of alternatives. This ensures patients who opt for this procedure are better informed of problems which have been described specially those that are unique to synthetic slings.
