The Letter-Poem and Its Literary Affect: Mark Ford’s ‘The Death of Hart Crane’
In this essay, Caleshu explores Mark Ford’s prose poem, ‘The Death of Hart Crane’ for its epistolary/prose poem crossover and its perpetuation of literary affect. The history of the relationship between the fictitious letter and the prose poem is traced back through French and American literature, from Baudelaire to Ashbery. Ford’s reliance on literaryness is explored as conditioning a major point of affective tension within his work, while affect theory (via Gregg and Seigworth) and similarly queer theory (via Stein and Bray), provide an infrastructure for the deconstruction of this poem’s coded interests in manoeuvring between sex and time.
