Chapter five defines blank cinema using Tim Hunter’s 1986 film River’s Edge to exemplify its unique style and directorial techniques as well as its narrative structure. The chapter discusses other films that were popular in the mid-1980s and explains how blank cinema fit into mainstream cinema enough to attract audiences and but proved different enough to show its subversive nature.
