The science and technology of tribology is concerned with the optimization of technical systems from the study of friction and wear. The chapter presents an introduction to tribology and gives an overview of the functional and structural parameters of tribological systems. It reviews the basic features of friction, wear, and lubrication and describes measurement, testing, and sensor technology for characterizing tribological systems.
