Collaborating Across Organisational Cultures: Lessons from a Study of International Branch Campuses

This chapter arose from an interview-based study of international branch campus (IBC) marketing. Participants highlighted the need for effective collaboration between home and international campus. They observed that differences in organisational culture, stage of development and operating context must be recognised in order to optimise relationships and outcomes. Key tasks include establishment of a shared understanding of vision, values and mission; active development of a cross-boundary, single-team ethos; and clear allocation of responsibility and accountability. Also required are willingness to adapt—both individually and organisationally—as the campus evolves; and willingness to harness diverse perspectives, using them as an asset and strength. A checklist of guiding principles is provided, including the questions that institutions should ask themselves at different stages of the IBC development process.
