Intercultural Harmony in Recent Irish Cinema: Moore Street Masala as a Case in Point

Abstract

Gonzalez-Casademont argues that, in contrast to many media discourses and screen portrayals of the Irish Republic’s transformed ethnoscape which are framed in terms of marginal minorities versus a normative majority, the musical short Moore Street Masala (O’Sullivan 2009) offers an engaging epiphany of intercultural harmony through a refreshing take on the integrationist role of music and dance. Avoiding a focus on the immigrants’ assimilation into the host country and the depiction of an ideal multicultural Irish society, O’Sullivan’s film offers a cogent bid for the role of public spaces in forging intercultural bonds. It also advocates the inclusion of internal and external others based on a notion of equality within difference rather than on mere tolerance.
