The Creation of ASI, the First Astronauts, Numerous Satellites and an Italian Launch Vehicle

Wednesday, 8 June 1988 was hailed as a great day for everyone in Italy who had anything to do with space. The Gazzetta Ufficiale published the text of the law passed on May 30, entitled Founding of the Italian Space Agency (ASI). After longstanding aspirations, numerous attempts, various draft laws presented and the long eight-year apprenticeship of the National Space Plan under the umbrella of the National Research Council, an organization that would coordinate the entire sector had been founded: European and international relations, relationships with universities, research centres and industries. The Ministry of Research would provide political direction, but ASI would handle the management.
