War between Genoa and Venice was now inevitable. For years, the Republic of Venice, traditionally known as “La Serenissima”, could no longer stand Genoa’s growing interference in commercial trade with the East, which it wanted to control. Clashes often took place during diplomatic negotiations or during business exchanges. However, in 1376, a palace conspiracy in Constantinople, supported by the Genoese, also led to the involvement and mistreatment of the Venetian merchants residing in the town, with no mediation attempts taking place to bring the oppression to an end.
