Holocaust Education in Austrian Primary Schools: A Plea for Teaching the History of National Socialism to 9- and 10-Year-Olds
Mittnik offers an important summary in the field of Holocaust education in primary schools. Focusing on an Austrian perspective, the article summarizes different approaches to teaching about the Holocaust and aims to determine whether 9- and 10-year-olds are too young to learn about the topic. Mittnik shows, with results from an empirical study, that students in primary schools already have beliefs about National Socialism. The issue is raised even in textbooks, but there is still no professional discourse in Austria and Germany about how to handle the challenge of teaching the topic at that age. Some critical teaching recommendations are made regarding a suitable solution that respects the age of children.
