Management of Database in Hernia Surgery
Hernia surgery, although being the treatment of the common, has to manage a huge variability. Variability and low generalizability have shown to be major challenges to RCTs. Registries have proven at the same time to be a helpful tool in the pursue of better results. The following chapter presents some of the advantages of hernia databases and a rationale for the need of different kinds of databases and discusses their limitations. It becomes clear that whereas quality control is a convincing tale narrative—believed and promoted feverously in our days—the main purpose of databases should be the improvement of patients’ treatment by transparency of results.
