Hernia Surgery in Australasia
Australasia refers to Australia and New Zealand. When considering the Pacific, input was obtained from six of the island countries of the Southern Pacific Ocean. The recent history of hernia repair in this part of the world is described, before examining the current situation, including results of surgeon preferences for repair of the various types of hernia. The wider benefits of videolaparoscopic technology on hernia repair in New Zealand are considered, as well as the effect of the current controversy surrounding the use of mesh in surgery. Finally, the author gives his view on the main cause for postoperative pain in laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair.
