Enteric Access and Feeding Tubes

Abstract

Gastrostomy or gastrojejunostomy placement for nutritional support of patients with inadequate oral intake has been attempted using surgical, endoscopic, and, more recently, percutaneous radiologically guided methods. Among them, percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy (PRG), gastrojejunostomy (PRGJ), and jejunostomy (PJ) via fluoroscopic guidance are the least invasive methods for direct placement of catheters into either the stomach or the jejunum. Percutaneous jejunostomy is indicated for patients whose stomach is inaccessible for gastrostomy placement, requires jejunal feeding, or for those who have had a previous gastrectomy.
