Abstract

Azzam discusses the human rights which provide the framework for a set of standards to monitor the needed protection for minorities of the Middle East and North Africa. While it is true that the Christians’ dhimmi status was a contractual understanding that the state would protect them and they would enjoy full cultural and religious freedom, this status also set them apart from other citizens. He argues that only the principles of human rights and their treaties and conventions offer an approach that will provide protection for religious and other minorities on the basis of the inherent dignity of all humanity. Realization of these principles will require mobilization and advocacy.
