A Lasallian Commitment to the Arts and Liberal Arts

  • Heidi Laudien
Part of the The Arts in Higher Education book series (AHE)

Laudien offers an overview of the courses and programs of study at Manhattan College that illustrate the college’s commitment to the performing, literary, and visual arts as core components of a liberal arts education and as set forth in the college’s mission statement. Focusing on five courses, Laudien illustrates the range of offerings and activities that support the integration of professional skills into liberal arts classes as described by the manifold ways in which Manhattan College students are exposed to the arts. Courses such as “Theatre in the City” and “Children’s Literature” to the 500th Anniversary of the Jewish Ghetto in Venice, Italy, are just a sampling of Manhattan College’s commitment to the arts and the opportunities available to students. These classes present an academic and service-learning opportunity, fundamental to our Lasallian educational experience.
