Abstract

Partner uses a previously unpublished manuscript inventory of books on optical subjects to offer a new approach to Marvell’s poetic writing about vision, especially during the period of his stay at Nun Appleton House. Attention is given to the ways in which the categories of ‘optics’—which included the geometrically-conceived fields of painting, perspective, scenography, architecture and lens technology—provide a new means to understand some of Marvell’s most well-known writing about vision. In ‘Upon Appleton House’ itself, these visual ideas are shown to have particular political force—a connection that is explored at length in the following chapter.
