When I began this project in 2010, all I had was a story I heard from professors at the University of the Philippines about travelling Italian opera companies performing in the Philippines in the nineteenth century. Often talked about in passing in the Philippine theatre and music history courses during my bachelor’s studies, the topic at the time seemed more like a thing of legend since academic literature on the topic was and remains scarce. It was the starting point of my doctoral project—an exciting topic that entangles Manila and the Asia Pacific into the Global Histories of Theatre and Music.

Before having the chance to do archival research in Asia, I read historical musicologist Michael McClellan’s ‘Performing Empire: Opera in Colonial Hanoi’. His research tells about the theatre building projects, and the opera seasons that featured imported French opera companies in French Indochina in the late-nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century.1As would become apparent,...
