Aesthetic characteristics of the belly button can be determined by the plastic surgeon. A new classification of the umbilicus is suggested by analyzing photographs of 100 non-operated female abdomens. The “tongue and groove type” (25 %), “T type” (28 %), and “split type” (12 %) belly buttons are considered to be attractive. The last group consists of non-aesthetic belly buttons such as the post-partum type, herniated, round, and obese belly buttons. The surgical techniques to create tongue and groove and split type belly buttons are described. Round belly buttons are unaesthetic and should be avoided.
