The Effect of Self-Assessment as a Revision Technique on Egyptian EFL Students’ Expository Essay Writing

Abstract

At a time when the world is changing at an unprecedented pace, being able to pause and evaluate one’s self becomes an indispensable asset. This chapter reports on a study examining the effect of self-assessment as a revision technique on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing in an Egyptian university context to raise students’ awareness of their common mistakes. The study examined the effect of self-assessment on the EFL students’ overall expository writing as defined in terms of content, organisation, language, and overall writing ability. The study also examined the participants’ attitudes towards self-assessment as a technique intended to promote their expository essay writing proficiency. Forty engineering freshmen at an Egyptian University were pre- and post-tested to examine the impact of the self-assessment rubric developed specifically for the study of writing proficiency. Moreover, a post-treatment questionnaire was given to the experimental group to trace the participants’ attitudes towards the treatment (i.e. self-assessment). The results of the study indicated that self-assessment led to a highly significant improvement in students’ writing (i.e. content, organisation, language aspects, and overall writing ability). The results of the post-treatment questionnaire indicated that participants favoured self-assessment as a technique that led to raising their awareness of their common mistakes and improving their essay writing proficiency.
