‘We Need to Keep the Door Open’: A Framework for Better Understanding the Formation of Younger Teachers in Catholic Schools

Abstract

Younger teachers in Catholic schools have a key role in maintaining the religious identity of the school. This is especially so at a time of significant cultural change. This chapter reports on an empirical study which examined school principal perceptions in three key areas: the religious experience and background of younger teachers in schools; what is being done to support younger teachers; any particular challenges in the formation of younger teachers. Some key findings were that younger teachers are reflective of the wider cultural shifts in religious practice and belief but are open to greater engagement with the religious tradition.
