Empowering Girls and Women Through Experiential Education: A Peace Corps Volunteer’s Story

Abstract

The author was a Peace Corp Volunteer in a rural village in the northeastern region of South Africa. Her primary project involved working with four women educators to develop an after-school empowerment programme for seventh-grade girls in the community. Grounded in experiential learning, the programme emphasized HIV/AIDS prevention and involved sex education, self-defence, leadership development, health and fitness, team building, environmental awareness, crafts and creative expression, goal setting, and community service. Having worked in tandem with the women educators so that they led much of the programme whilst the author was in situ supported their continuation of the programme after the author departed. This chapter includes recommendations for programme development in international contexts and explores the challenges of sustainability.
