Abstract

Cutting oils are extremely stressed by thermal and mechanical influences. To improve their efficiency, additives are added. These substances, e.g., CI-paraffins, or compounds containing sulphur, react with the metal being worked, thus forming surface layers which are instable to shearing stress and, therefore, function like a solid film lubricant. The range of thermal stability of these reaction layers is limited. This range, the optimal concentration of additives, and the probable life of the oil can be determined by DSC measurements, which give information about the limits of application of a particular additive.
