Further Development and Application of a Combined System for Simultaneous Thermal Analysis and Mass Spectrometry

Abstract

The experiences obtained with a combined simultaneous thermal analysis (TG-DTA-DTG) apparatus and quadrupole mass spectrometer resulted in developments in the applied high-temperature coupling system. The geometric arrangement of the gas inlet orifices can be varied, the distance between samples and ion source has been reduced. These steps improved the sensitivity detecting condensable metal vapours. The calculation of the heat of evaporation of cadmium from a silver-cadmium alloy is demonstrated by means of the observed increase in intensity for cadmium in the mass spectrum.
