Abstract

The importance of K as a nutrient in all forms of life has been realized decades ago, and huge amount of efforts have been invested in the past to understand its role in plant as well as in animal. Properly documented for its role in animal and plant, the conventional requirement for any cell is to maintain K homeostasis. In each cell, starting from prokaryotes to eukaryotes, several mechanisms do exist to keep a check on K homeostasis. One thing that is common among lower and higher organism is that they all possess same ‘decorative designs’, termed as channels and transporters, to maintain K homeostasis (Miller 2000). These transporter and channels differ in their activity, selectivity and regulation, giving rise to multitude of responses in a cell. The intracellular abundance of K in a cell is itself an indicator of its immense significance in the biological system (Dreyer and Uozumi 2011).
