Construction of “Aesthetics” as Construction of “the Aesthetic”

In the first chapter I define the most basic conceptual framework of Adorno’s aesthetics. At first, I provide an outline of Adorno’s first book, Kierkegaard: The Construction of Aesthetic. Then, I point to the different strategies undertaken by Adorno to overcome the aporetic scenario resulting from his early determination of aesthetics. I take into account some essays on the sociology of music, the epistolary exchange with Benjamin, and the essay on Culture Industry in the Dialectic of Enlightenment. In this context, Adorno’s definition of aesthetics is presented in the light of his attempt to conceive art as a product of human activity, which is able to present the oppressive structural laws of society and, at the same time, criticize them. Precisely this kind of definition of aesthetics will be identified as the seed for the principle of the dissolution of aesthetics.
