The Immanence of the New Weird: China Miéville’s Perdido Street Station

Abstract

In this chapter the author carries out a schizoanalytic reading of China Miéville’s Perdido Street Station, marking the links between his conception of the New Weird and the conception of immanent dystopia the author proposes. The analyses mostly revolve around the idea of hybridity, a notion which not only defines the narrative structure of the novel but also characterises the dystopian world depicted in it. The author engages with hybridity as a plane which illustrates the capitalist and the revolutionary treatments of desire in the dystopian societies under late capitalism.
