Recalls of the Classical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field

In this chapter, the theory of propagation of an electromagnetic (e.m.) field will be treated, and the interaction of this field with atoms will be described. A classical description of a laser beam will be presented, based on Maxwell equations, but also the formulation of the theory in terms of vector and scalar potentials will be introduced. Moreover, the conservation theorems of energy and momentum of the e.m. field will be formulated and proved.
