This chapter introduces de Man and accounts for his ideological evolution throughout and immediately after the Great War, emphasising the impact of his experiences as a soldier and diplomat, including his missions to Russia and the United States. It spells out the originality of de Man’s war experience and his tentative conclusions about the impact of the war, which differed sharply from those of other left-wing figures who chose to fight.
