Design of Photonic Crystal Based Optical Sensor for Analyzing Water Content in Milk

Abstract

In the present paper, we have proposed an ultra-compact and an ultra-fast two dimensional square lattice type photonic crystal based microring resonator (MRR) for biosensing applications which is capable of determining the water content present in a milk sample. The density as well as the refractive index of the milk is changed by changing the water content. The ambient refractive index (RI) of the rod based structure is changed by dipping the structure into different milk samples. The shift in the resonant wavelength of the output light at the through port of the structure is observed for the different milk samples by using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation method. The proposed structure has the sensitivity of 1000 nm/RIU and Quality factor of around 29580.
