How do words create meaning as we communicate? This chapter argues that it is not a straightforward relationship between word and meaning but that meaning can be structured in different ways, through the word itself; its lexical, structural, and experiential associations; and the context in which it sits. The reader is encouraged to notice the use of words, and this is then explored through a discussion of collocation, semantic preference, and semantic prosody. Semantic relations such as synonymy and homonymy are outlined and exemplified using English literature. Classroom strategies include reflective, awareness-raising tasks, as well as shorter, more dynamic activities.
