The Silhouette Method

Technique for Occlusion Processing in Field Rendering

Abstract

Occlusion is one of the most important cues in depth perception, and it is also the most difficult process in computer holography. The silhouette method is a technique to process occlusion in computer holography. In this chapter, the simplest silhouette method to process occlusion between separate objects is discussed in the beginning. The Babinet’s principle is then introduced to extend the silhouette method to processing of occlusion between polygons. This type of silhouette method, called the switch-back technique, is the basis of rendering complicated 3D models.
