Abstract

This chapter is devoted to the relatively recent sol-gel-derived materials, characterized by a complex structure or texture. These comprise hybrid organic–inorganic sol-gel materials and the composite materials in which the matrix is made by sol-gel processing. The various types of structures of hybrid materials and their possible classification are first summarized. Typical examples are next described, made with silica or other inorganic components as well as various organic components, including the carbon nanotube-based aerogel composites and also various types of hybrid architectures. A few original properties of these new materials, essentially mechanical, are then outlined. Composite materials are also briefly introduced, and their main difference with hybrid gels is summarized.
