Following the recovery of independence, Algerian cinema tried to participate with all its available resources—and limitations—to the writing of the liberation war history. “Born of the independence war, Algerian cinema is haunted by its history” writes Guy Austin, for whom the recurrent dependence of Algerian cinema on the “national trauma first began with La Bataille d’Alger” (Guy Austin, “Traumas, Cinema and the Algerian War,” New Readings 10 [2009], 20). Produced by Casbah Films, the film by Gillo Pontecorvo has done much to promote the image of Algeria and its liberation war throughout the world.
