Advocacy in Pediatric Psychological Consultation

Advocacy has been characterized as the process of giving a voice to those without a voice. Pediatric psychologists are uniquely trained to conceptualize a child holistically; integrate medical, developmental, familial, and psychological factors in treatment; as well as inform comprehensive care of the child and family, all the while stimulating system-level changes. The relative dearth of published activity in pediatric psychology focusing on the development of evidence-based advocacy strategies and interventions needs to be addressed. The present chapter is intended to provide a systematic overview of advocacy and practical interventions for the pediatric psychologist to “champion” for the needs and rights of the most vulnerable in the health-care system.
