An Android Based Assessment Tool for the Visually Impaired
Vision processing is one of the important function human brain performs utilizing its one third of resources. Any injury or damage in the skull housing brain results in various visual impairments that can vary from severe impairment to only cognitive visual problems. Individuals with visual impairments (VI) may have intact perception of their movements. The progression of such medical conditions of patients can be identified, defined and tracked using medical assessments tools. Any development of such a functioning and cost effective assessment tool assist the medical practitioner to access the history of patient resulting in successful diagnosis and treatment, continuous observation and experimentation. In this work a new tool is developed for the medical rehabilitation and treatment of the visually impaired patients–especially young children–and provide a safety measure by recommending preventive and corrective actions from further deteriorating the impairment. It provides a measure of a stable life for the individuals by assessing them for defining characteristics of visual and/or cognitive impairments. Seven modules are designed in this research, namely color detection, object size detection, static detection, linear detection, motion detection, vision detection for static objects and vision detection for mobile objects. Each module was tested on three groups of subjects. The results from this tool are verified by ophthalmologists and neurologists. The system can identify different states of multiple subjects. This assessment tool is easily available, reliable and very cheap.

The study presented here is performed after seeking consent of the patients and the confidentiality and anonymity of the research respondents will be respected and ensured.
