Abstract

Perennial submerged herb with thin, cylindric, fragile, poorly branched porous stem, usually 4 leaves in regular whorls, rooted, terrestrial form unknown. Shoot 20–120 cm long, unbranched fibrous roots 10–20 cm long, adventitious roots formed at shoot bases, finely pinnate leaves with leaf filaments in one plane, leaf filaments circular in cross section. Pendent or erect flower spikes float above the surface, no overwintering organs.
