In 2017, Elon Musk claimed that, by the end of the year, a Tesla would be able to drive ‘from a parking lot in California to a parking lot in New York. No controls touched at any point during the entire journey’. At the time, Tesla customers could pay an extra $8000 for ‘Full self-driving capability’ in their new cars. As of 2019, this capability, and the promised coast-to-coast drive, remain unfulfilled. In 2018, when he was challenged by the journalist Lesley Stahl on his failure to meet deadlines, Musk laughed it off, saying ‘Punctuality’s not my strong suit’.
