In a supersonic flow, the disturbance caused by a body is perceived only within a bounded range of influence. This is completely analogous to unsteady compressible flow, which also is described by hyperbolic differential equations, but there the resulting state of affairs is independent of whether the Mach number is greater than or less than one.
