Diffusing the Myth Around Environmental Sustainable Development Delivery in South African Construction Industry

Abstract

Environmental Sustainable Development (ESD) is the future of construction, following the necessity to preserve the environment in order to serve present needs and the future generation as well. This research investigates the reluctance of South African Construction Industry (SACI) designers in delivering ESD solution. The study will impact SACI to accelerate incorporation and compliance of ESD solution into its construction development delivery. A desktop research approach was employed by reviewing existing literatures to identify the wrong perceptions of SACI designers regarding ESD delivery. The major myth that surrounds reluctance to ESD as inferred is increase in building costs. This myth is due to misunderstanding of the ESD concept, lack of experience in ESD delivery, reluctance to construction technological change of ESD, lack of awareness of the benefits of ESD, and client’s reluctance to engage in ESD. Diffusing the myth and it underlying factors will involve enacting ESD supporting policies, intensified by awareness of its benefits and importance.
