Abstract

This chapter explores the generally hostile response of the Conservative Right to the growth of the welfare state since 1945. It begins by looking at those who opposed the creation of the post-1945 welfare state and the opposition the Right generated against the more moderate elements of the Conservative Party who were prepared to accept the welfare measures. It then examines the Thatcherite attempts to restrict the provision of state welfare after 1979. The chapter, in particular, gives considerable attention to the Conservative Right’s belief that the welfare state created a dependency culture.
