Immigration

Abstract

The decline of the British empire led on to two further dilemmas for national policy makers, on both of which the Conservative Right made a distinctive contribution. The first was that of immigration. The influx of non-white immigration led the Conservative Right, most famously Enoch Powell, to call for tighter immigration controls. His speeches are examined together with subsequent attempts to restrict immigration. The chapter explores the rhetoric and the policy of the Conservative Right towards immigration control.
