Museum and Memoir

Abstract

Both museum and memoir are biographical objects. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, contemporary interest in the sublime motivates tourists to visit the Blasket Interpretative Centre on the Dingle Peninsula, which has recently been designated part of Ireland’s “Wild Atlantic Way.” In this chapter, Nic Craith explores the curatorial vision that inspired the original initiative as well as the significance of The Islandman for the museum exhibition. This centre, which is located at the edge of Europe, highlights the interfaces represented in An tOileánach—between tradition and modernity, literary and visual, and between the local and global. The museum gives an embodied experience of life on an Irish island some 100 years ago.
