Abstract

The terms Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD), Osteoarthritis, and Osteoarthrosis (OA) have often been used as synonyms in the past. Peck and colleagues, in the ‘expanded Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) taxonomy’, enveloped osteoarthritis and osteoarthrosis as separate entities within the DJD group. The two show the same anatomical features, however osteoarthritis refers to a high inflammatory status along with a painful joint condition (arthralgia), a clinical symptom which is instead absent in DJD subjects that present with signs of osteoarthrosis (Ahmad et al. 2009; Schiffman et al. 2014; Peck et al. 2014). For convenience, the two terms shall here fall under the same label osteoarthrosis/osteoarthritis (OA).
