Complications in Biceps Tendon Management: Long Head of Biceps Tenotomy and Tenodesis

Tenotomy and tenodesis of the long head of biceps (LHB) are very common procedures in shoulder surgery.

While tenotomy is an easy and very effective procedure, “popeye deformity” and biceps muscle-belly cramping are potential drawbacks. To reduce the risk of these side-effects, many surgeons perform a biceps tenodesis, with many technical options described in the literature. While complications in biceps tendon management are generally low, each specific tenodesis technique carries its own potential risks.

In this chapter we will discuss complications of LHB tendon tenotomy and tenodesis and will give tips and tricks to avoid them.
