Australian Grasslands – Variety and Extent

Two major forms of grassland are widespread in Australia. Those dominated by native species, the predominant harbours for many native insects, are of most conservation concern, whilst the pastures dominated by introduced alien grass species provide a rather different suite of resources. In many instances they are not an adequate substitute for the composition and variety of native flora that they replace. The variety of native grasslands, and the implications of changes from alien introductions are outlined below.
