The Shaykhī School and Wilāya

Abstract

The conceptualization of wilāya, nubuwwa, imamate, the stations of gnosis, and the sealing was not confined to Ibn ʿArabı̄. As the author discusses in this chapter, the Shaykhı̄ ʿulem ā formed their philosophy around the question of authority, focusing on wilāya of the imāms and of the Prophet. Although Akbarı̄an mysticism and Shaykhı̄sm have resemblances in this regard, and a plethora of literature produced by the Shaykhı̄ ʿulemā testifies to the fact that wilāya was one of their main questions, these similarities are nominal. Wilāya was a signifier with two totally different signs, a pure kalāmı̄ one which was conceptualized by Aḥsāʾı̄ and his followers, and an ʿirfānı̄ one theorized by Ibn ʿArabı̄ and his students. The kalāmı̄ narrative of wilāya was inspired by the teachings of the imāms, whose realm was more sublime than the misunderstandings of Ibn ʿArabı̄ and his school.
