China-Zimbabwe Relations: A Strategic Partnership?

Introduction

The all-encompassing nature of the China-Zimbabwe relations has led some scholars to classify this partnership as strategic. The two nations have become partners in almost every sector ranging from economic, social, and even the military. This relationship has been characterized by a rapid increase in the amount of trade between the two nations. Zimbabwe has come to rely on China’s investment, loans, aid, and grants. China, on the other hand, sees Zimbabwe as a source of raw materials that China desperately needs to expand its empire. Mutuality has become a central feature of the relationship between these two countries. Both countries seem to be gaining from the other what they cannot obtain on their own. China now also plays an important political role on the international arena, particularly as one of Zimbabwe’s defenders from the Western nations’ aggression.
