Mobile Machines Easily Assembled with Planar Link Parts for Designing and Prototyping Practice to Inspire Junior/Senior High School Students

Abstract

Aiming to inspire junior/senior high school students who will learn mechanical engineering in engineering university, the author has organized practice classes at their schools. Mechanical systems composed of planar link mechanisms with single degree-of-freedom were developed and examined in the classes to make students experience designing and prototyping safely in short time. Two examples of the mechanical systems: a mobile machine hanging down two ropes with two 4-bar link arm mechanisms and a quadruped walking machine with two 6-bar legs mechanisms were offered as assembly kits including acrylic link plates with many holes for revolute joints, combination bolts and a drive units. These practice classes to design and prototype the moving mechanical systems made students enjoy and gave them great impression on engineering to be learnt in engineering university or graduate school.
