Conclusion: Just Words

This concluding chapter offers some final reflections on the meaning of four key words—victory, recognition, balance, and multiculturalism—that have figured prominently in the history and theory of multiculturalism in Canada. These reflections support the suggestion that what Canadians have created in the past half century is a new creedal nationalism, open to all who accept its articles of faith, and striving to win converts around the world. Multiculturalism in Canada, including interculturalism in Quebec, raises unanswered questions about the relation between political and conventionally “religious” faith, for it seems to be aspiring to serve as the unifying modern progressive global religion.
