Abstract

In this chapter, the authors collaborated with a community math educator, a local reverend, to examine the impact of engaging pedagogies in advanced math—using manipulatives, games, and teamwork. He provided supplemental instruction for students failing regular courses, empowering them to understand algebraic logics and methods. He also mentored teachers in their own skills development, creating a learning community of teachers in a school. These projects illustrate the potential of engaged scholarship to support activist educators in their pursuit of remedies to the challenges they face, an approach used with great success in Ireland.
